Although we could only stay for one night, the Splendid Etoile lived up to my expectations...which admitedly were a tad high thanks to fellow reviewers. We arrived about 11 am via the AirFrance bus, but our room was not ready yet. The clerk told me we were getting a very
nice room and it would be worth the wait (and it was!). We were able to leave our luggage behind and went to explore.
Upon our return to the hotel, we were given the key (darn, I should have taken a photo of the key! It’s a great big heavy thing which you leave at the front desk when you leave) to room 407. Our luggage had already been taken upstairs. We boarded the tiny elevator (lovely wood and brass, but if you’re claustrophobic you might want to take the circular stairs) and arrived at the 4th floor.
407 is one of the corner rooms - it had three balconies—two off the main room and one in the bathroom. The view of course was incredible - talk about ambience! All the balconies had French doors with double glass which truly blocked the sounds of the streets below. We opted for the noise of the city and enjoyed a lovely breeze.
The beds were comfortable, with crisp linens and extra pillows that were found in the closet. The bathroom, as many have noted, is very long and narrow but more than adequate.
We did not take the breakfast - there are many cafes within easy walking distance and a wonderful bakery/cafe 2 blocks away. When we were checking out, I mentioned that we’d probably take a cab to pick up our rental car which was on Avenue Foch. Farouck, who is easily one of the most upbeat people I’ve ever met, offered to walk our luggage down to the rental office! So off we went, bags in tow, following him to our destination—it’s a memory I won’t soon forget!
Overall, our brief stay at the Spendid Etoile was wonderful. My only regret is that travel plans did not allow us to stay another night. The common areas are not large or fancy - if you need an impressive lobby, go to the Meridian or the Westin. If you want a clean room with an outstanding view (yes, splurge for the superior room, it’s worth it!) easy transit options (bus from the airport on the corner,
taxi stand outside, RER a few steps from the door and the metro up on the corner) and a friendly, helpful staff, the Splendid Etoile will do very nicely.
