Lovely hotel!

We’ve just returned from a one-night weekend stay at the Hotel Splendid Etoile in Paris. The reception staff were friendly, spoke excellent English and couldn’t do enough to accommodate us. I booked a superior room but upon checking in (which they kindly let us do a couple of hours early) they gave us a free upgrade to a suite, which was an unexpected but very welcome bonus! I enquired at the desk about an iron and within 10 minutes an iron and ironing board were delivered to my room!
On Saturday evening, we ate at the restaurant Le Pré Carre attached to the hotel and my hubby, the steak connoisseur, adored his filet steak and said it was one of the best he’d eaten. I had rack of lamb, which was equally fantastic, and the profiteroles were to die for.
The weather was cold and drizzly after dinner on Saturday night and we were very glad of our suite as instead of going for a walk we bought some wine and cosied up in the room by the window, overlooking the Arc de Triomphe and watching the crazy traffic and the lights twinkle on the Eiffel Tower.
Tips: (1) We didn’t take breakfast at the hotel – even though it looked nice – as hubby wanted something ‘cooked’ so we went to the café on the opposite corner and had a tasty breakfast of cheese omelette, French bread, croissant and jam, OJ and hot choc – divine – all for €11.90.
(2) The bar at Planet Hollywood has a happy hour at around 4 pm (not sure if that’s every day but it applied to Sunday) – all drinks half price.
(3) The mini bar is a tad expensive - you can buy beer, wine and snacks from the supermarket at the bottom of the hill for much less.
I’d cannot thank the hotel enough for a lovely anniversary weekend as it was pure magic.
(there was only one down side to the trip and that was the taxi ride from the hotel to station for the journey home. The hotel kindly called a taxi for us and instead of taking 10 minutes and costing €8.50 as it did on the way to the hotel, it took an hour and cost over €25! We felt well and truly ripped off – a London cabbie would have tried all kinds of back street routes to get us there quickly – this guy sat on one long road just inching along! That was at 6.20 pm on a Sunday evening). Good thing we left in plenty of time!
All in all, I would definitely recommend Hotel Splendid Etoile!
